Fitting Intrauterine Devices – theory training days for nurses
Course accredited by the Royal College of Nursing
Course details: These popular courses for just 24 nurses provide the theoretical training to enable them to extend their role in this important area of service provision. The day consists of lectures giving a comprehensive background to IUTs, how they work, anatomy and physiology, followed by some practical experience using pelvic models and devices. Advice is given about how to do the practical training in accordance with RCN guidelines. It is an ideal opportunity to meet colleagues working in the same field, to ask questions, and to gain confidence prior to starting practical training.
Those wishing to apply should refer to the RCN publication "Intrauterine Techniques, RCN accreditation and training guidance for nurses and midwives" – publication code 003 179 – October 2011 (5th edition). This guide outlines the recommended knowledge and skills required.

LARC – long acting, reversible contraception - is being positively promoted by the Department of Health as it is a very effective and relatively inexpensive method of contraception. There is a requirement for it to be more readily available in general practice, and therefore more people need to be trained to meet the need. We have developed the theory course over the last 6 years in consultation with the RCN, and with valued and continuing support from Bayer Health Care and Durbin plc. |
